 Selecting Your Handbag

Primary Handbags

Don’t think of your handbag as a splurge.  Think of it the single most important component of your wardrobe.  If you’re like most women, you probably don’t wear any given outfit more than four times a month.  Your handbag, on the other hand, is the one item that you carry every day.  So when you think about it, it’s worth it to spend a little more to find a stylish handbag that you are passionate about.  The rule of thumb in the fashion world: Never spend less on your handbag than you would spend on an average outfit — including your shoes!  After all, your handbag gets more play than anything else in your wardrobe.

So many women shop at upscale stores for beautiful apparel, then ruin the look with knock offs or handbags that are dated, worn-out and poorly-crafted. Your handbag is a personal item that tells others something about your personality — whether you are outgoing or adventurous, creative or artistic, liberal or conservative, tailored or trendy...  You can be caught looking your worst, but sport a great handbag, and people tend to notice that and forget the rest.  Treat yourself to at least one new primary handbag each season.

Secondary Handbags

Many women change their handbag for the weekend or after hours.  If you choose a handbag to go with your working wardrobe, your secondary bag can give you a chance to introduce more daring colors and styles.  This summer, why not have some fun with a bright yellow clutch, raffia tote with black patent trim or flirty red wristlet?  A secondary bag lets you change your look from serious and sensible to fun-loving and flirty.  Perhaps, during the week, you need a larger bag to tote around your planner and PDA, but on weekends you only need your wallet and a lipstick.  Different handbags can reflect different sides of your personality, while serving different functions.

Evening Bags

Every woman should have three classic clutches on-hand to fall back on.  They are (in order of importance): black patent or leather, silver metallic and gold metallic.  With these three clutches at your fingertips, you always will have something that works for formal occasions and cocktails — no matter the outfit.  Your clutch should be harmonious with your shoes.  (Hint: You need shoes in those materials too!)  They do not have to be a perfect match, just fairly close.  It is never appropriate to carry your primary handbag when you are dressed for a special occasion.
